MY MISSION
GIVING VOICE TO SITES
Story over Time
My interest in working outdoor and on sites started up upon my return to Malaysia in 1994, and together with Shakti Dances in 1995, I had the opportunity to learn from Five Arts Center, Theaterworks and was inspired by the site specific movement and performances that was so ground breaking and experimental at that time.
I have lost documentations and many photos of productions from those early years but the works with Shakti Dances, ASK students, and my solos from 1994 on to 2006 was among my earliest experience and achievements that have shaped my preferred way of working today on site-specific creations. I continued working outdoor from then on, to give voice and feature the plight of abandoned and forgotten sites, nature and people or community living on site. I am eager to create more site works as Moved By Padi was my last project outdoor in 2016. I am soon Revisiting River to give voice to river and highlight its current condition. It will be presented by the Artist Collective Ombak-Ombak ArtStudio. Contact me if you are interested in supporting our site works.
EMPOWERING THE YOUNG
Uncage the Warrior
My works with children and youth started up under the guidance and tutelage of Janet Pillai (USM) through projects with Young People Theater Penang, Teater Muda Five Arts Center and Arts-Ed. I truly enjoyed and loved our works in engaging children and youth in Penang from 1995 - 2002 to express themselves on different themes through performance. Already then we were creating street works with young people that was brought out to the community produced by Ombak-Ombak ArtStudio together with Arts-Ed. Opera Pasar, Ceritera Kebun Bunga, Keeping The Streets Alive, are some of my favorite pieces and the Penang community seem to agree! Projects with young people are true labor of love, which i will always cherish and treasure as I am proud to follow the progress and growth of those we have worked with , as they continue to develop as leaders, performers and creators in their areas of work. Today i continue my role as the Nurturer - in leading the Euphoria Penang Modern Dance Ensemble and guiding young performers at Studio Pentas. Contact me to know more about my works in empowering young people.
MOBILIZE FOR A CAUSE
An Artist on Love and Care
My works on empowering others to express their concerns on certain social issues, and to raise awareness through performance
and dance started out first as my own personal and artistic journey to inspire change and transformation through my solo creations on the issues that i am concern with. But it evolved through time into something poignant and universal - where others would join me or i lead them through different methods of play and performance method to raise awareness on causes as we demand for universal change. The methods and medium used was significant and made of ever changing power of love and care for certain issues. The strong statement often touch and move the audiences, and i often experience it as a tearjerker, When we can barely hold back our tears, that is when the healing and transformation happens - for the performers, the audiences and all involved. Do contact me if you are interested in using performance and dance to advocate for a cause and i will share with you my experiences.
STAND UP FOR DIVERSITYÂ ANDÂ INCLUSION
Healing HeARTS
The passion and drive to work with community that includes people of diverse background and needs, through dance and performance have always been on my mind for many years before it ever came to fruition. Once the idea was settled, I knew it would be among my greatest achievements, and i should be doing more works like these today. DaD the Dream a Dream Inclusion project presented by BOLD was one of the first inclusion project I collaborated together with Priscilla Ho and Liokee Tan and a team of Penang artists in 2009. Up till today it has been the most fulfilling project that has inspired me to continue my work oin diversity and inclusion, but i have to admit that it has been difficult without support and funding. Since DaD, i have continued independently, to initiate separate projects and choreography work with different communities, that has healed my heart as well as theirs as we value and honor each community, and each person as a unique expression. I would like to continue on this journey of healing through seeing each person as a whole being - mind, body, heart, and soul. So if you are inspired by my works to promote diversity and inclusion through dance and performance to build a compassionate and caring society - do contact me.
